2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 Engine and Drivetrain
As we mentioned above, the Challenger SRT Demon 170 is based on the revered Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, with its supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 and 797 horsepower. The Demon, however, takes it to the next level by changing every single part of the engine except for the camshaft to perfect the engine performance. This includes the fuel injectors, throttle body, and even the spark plugs. However, the most significant upgrade comes from the supercharger. Much of the Demon's supercharger's DNA is shared with the Direct Connection C170 Hellephant supercharger. The Demon's upgraded supercharger provides 21.3 PSI of boost pressure. Compared to the Hellcat Redeye's 15.3 PSI of boost, that's a 40% increase! This additional boost provides the engine with a 30% increase in airflow. The engine also uses high-flow fuel injectors to provide 164 gallons of fuel per hour, which is more than the average shower head! The engine's internals are upgraded to be enabled to run on E85 Ethanol fuel, while E10 can also be used. The gas tank uses ethanol sensors to detect the percentage of ethanol. With E85 Ethanol, the Demon rips out a breathtaking 1,025 horsepower and 945 lb-ft of torque, blazing from 0-60 in a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) certified 1.66 seconds with a G-force of 2.004 Gs. The Demon also runs an 8.91-second quarter mile. When using an E10 ethanol blend, the Demon still produces an exhilarating 900 horsepower and 810 lb-ft of torque. The Dodge Challenger Demon's extraordinary power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Performance Technologies for the Challenger Demon 170
There are many features and advanced technologies to take the Demon 170's performance even further. There are three main technologies used by the Demon 170 to help drivers achieve the fastest possible launch, 0-60, and quarter-mile times. These include Line Lock, Launch Control, and Launch Assist. The Line Lock feature locks the front brakes while the rears are allowed to spin freely to warm the tires before a track run with a rolling or stationary burnout. Meanwhile, Launch Control helps drivers keep the vehicle in a straight line while achieving the best possible launch time by choosing an RPM at which the vehicle will launch. The Launch Assist feature helps maintain traction and keep all four wheels on the ground by reducing wheel hop. The Demon 170 also uses three SRT Drive Modes to put drivers in full command. Drag mode is specifically designed for racing, as it optimizes the paddle shifters, transmission shift speed, suspension, and handling for enhanced racing performance. The SRT Performance Pages, displayed on the center stack's 8.4-inch touchscreen, show the driver engine output stats, 0-60 times, reaction times, engine performance, gauge information, G-force readings, and more.
Challenger Demon 170 Performance Equipment
When creating the 2023 Demon 170, Dodge knew that the car itself had to be tuned to handle the excessive power. That's why they gave it all-new special equipment to unlock 100% of its potential! To reach the record-breaking speeds that the Demon 170 has, the Challenger had to lose some weight. That's part of the reason they gave the Demon 170 a staggered wheel flare, removing the front wheel flares while keeping the rears. By taking away the front wheel flares, the Challenger dropped 16 pounds. The available lightweight Lacks Enterprises carbon fiber wheels help the Demon 170 lose a remarkable 157 pounds. The staggered fitment continues to the Micky Thomson ET Street drag radials. The front wheels have an 18-inch diameter, and the tires spread across 245 millimeters. Meanwhile, the rear wheels are 17 inches in diameter, and the tires are 315 millimeters wide. The Demon 170 also uses Bilstein shock absorbers with adaptive damping suspension. The unique Drag Mode uses the adaptive damping system to provide maximum weight transfer and custom drag settings. The Demon 170 is available with a factory Mopar roll cage and parachute. In fact, the Demon 170 is banned by the NHRA without these features, as it runs a sub-nine-second quarter mile.
