Hybrid Technology of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Written by Marburger CDJR

Jeep is launching itself into the hybrid electric vehicle segment with the all-new Wrangler 4xe. The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid that combines the world-class off-road capability of the Wrangler with the efficiency of a hybrid vehicle. How efficient will it be? The short answer is very efficient. But if you're a numbers person, the Wrangler 4xe has a 370-mile hybrid driving range, a 21-mile full-electric driving range, and a combined average of 49 MPG! Keep reading below to see how Jeep achieved such high numbers without sacrificing performance and capability!

How is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe powered?

The 4xe will be propelled by a turbocharged 2.0L Inline-4 cylinder gas engine combined with two electric generators powered by a 400-volt battery pack. The first electric generator is mounted on the cylinder head, while the second one is placed in front of the transmission in place of the torque converter. This setup provides the Wrangler 4xe with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. We would be remiss not to mention that 100% of the Wrangler 4xe's torque is instantly available. This is especially helpful when navigating rugged terrain because it allows you to keep the wheels moving without building up the RPMs. The Wrangler 4xe is still a Wrangler, so it still provides the off-road prowess of the gas-powered Wranglers with a full-time 4x4 drivetrain and off-road suspension.

What are the E-Selec drive modes?

E-Selec puts drivers in control of the Wrangler 4xe's hybrid system by allowing them to choose how their 4xe is powered. The system defaults to Hybrid mode. This mode uses electric power first but engages the gas motor when more power is requested by the driver pressing the accelerator. Electric mode disables the 4xe's gas engine for up to 21 miles of silent, zero-emissions driving. Electric mode can be used when the battery has more than 1% charge. Esave mode is the last available drive mode. This does the opposite of electric mode by disabling the electric generators and only using gas power, ultimately saving the electric power for a later time.

How is the Wrangler 4xe charged?

The Wrangler 4xe comes with a 120-volt Level I electric vehicle charger, which provides a 12-hour charge time. Owners can opt for a 240-volt Level II charger which speeds up charging time to just two hours. Jeep Brand charging stations are also to be placed at the Jeep Badge of Honor Trails trailheads. The 4xe also employs regenerative braking. This technology allows the battery to charge when the vehicle is braking or decelerating. The Max Regeneration feature reworks the accelerator for more aggressive regeneration at a low pedal position. This slows the vehicle down without using the brake pedal, which charges the battery and extends the life of the brake pads. The brake pedal is still required to bring the 4xe to a full stop.
