Is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon Good Off-Road?

Now in stock at Marburger CDJR!

Now that the Jeep 4xe Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) are arriving at dealers, this is a question that is frequently being asked: do the new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicons have all the capability you would expect of the gas or diesel models? Is the 4xe Rubicon up to the task of being one of the most rugged 4x4 sport vehicles you can buy, like the gas and diesel models are?

Well, you can rest assured that the 4xe Rubicon is an absolute off-roading machine. Remember, there is nothing less than 80 years of off-roading tradition at stake here so you can be sure that the folks at Jeep have built a phenomenal vehicle and have tested it in every possible off-road situation - even on the Rubicon Trail itself.

Plus, not only is reputation involved, the 4xe is the first strike in Jeep's push to electrify all of its models. They insist that electrification actually makes a 4x4 better than their fuel-powered brethren. For example, the Jeep 4xe Rubicon actually offers up 470 lb-ft of torque. Contrast that with the diesel 3.0-liter V-6 version rated at "just" 442 lb-ft of torque.

What? How can a PHEV develop more torque than a Diesel?

Well, the answer to that is actually simple. The 4xe Rubicon essentially has three drive motors in it. Motor number one is the inline-four is mounted up in the front of the Jeep under the hood. The second motor is a 44 horsepower motor that is bolted directly to the gas inline-four where an alternator would go. The third motor is a heavy-duty 134 horsepower unit that is mounted within the transmission housing.

So, why is the 4xe Rubicon so powerful? Because all three motors can be powered up simultaneously when needed. The result: 470 lb-ft of torque!

What does the 4xe Rubicon have for a 4x4 drivetrain?

For 2021, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon gets a  Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case with 4:1 low-range gear ratio, full-time 4×4, Dana 44 axles, and Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle lockers.

Can the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon operate just on just battery power when off-roading?

Yes, it can. The Wrangler 4xe Rubicon offers three "E Select" drive modes. In Electric mode, the Wrangler 4xe runs on battery power only, until it runs low on juice and the gas engine kicks in.  Hybrid mode is the default, and blends power from the gas and electric drivetrains. Finally, eSave mode prioritizes the gas engine, saving the battery power for later.

Can the battery packs get wet when fording deep water?

No, this was an important detail for the designers at Jeep. The 400-volt, 17 kWh battery packs are not only mounted high under the second row seats, they are encased in an aluminum housing. Not only the batteries but all the high-voltage electronics and wiring in the 4xe Rubicon are sealed and waterproofed.
