What Are Jeep's 4x4 Systems?
Across the entire Jeep lineup, models offer an array of 4x4 systems that have led to the brand's legendary off-road prowess. The Wrangler and Gladiator both share the same 4x4 drivetrains, Command-Trac, Selec-Trac, and Rock-Trac. Standard equipment is Command-Trac, a part-time system that allows you to shift from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive and back on the fly at speeds up to 55 MPH. Plus, to enhance traction, you can shift from 4-HI to 4-LO. Meanwhile, Selec-Trac is a full-time automatic 4x4 system, which uses a network of sensors to detect slip and redirect torque to the wheels with the most traction. Selec-Trac runs in 4-HI at all times unless the driver manually selects 4-LO. Finally, Rock-Trac is exclusive to the Wrangler and Gladiator Rubicon trims, featuring a 4:1 gear ratio in 4-LO to enhance traction at low speeds. The Grand Cherokee also offers three systems, Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. Quadra-Trac I features a single-speed transfer case, running in 4-HI at all times with a 52% rear and 48% front torque split. Using a brake lock differential, this system can also redistribute torque side to side to increase traction. Quadra-Trac II adds a 4-LO mode to the transfer case, optimizing the torque distribution for low-speed traction. Finally, Quadra-Drive II adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential to provide unrivaled traction. The rest of the lineup, Cherokee, Compass, and Renegade, use different variants of Jeep's Active Drive system, including Active Drive I, Active Drive Lock, and Active Drive Low.
What Off-Roading Features Do Jeeps Offer?
The Jeep lineup also uses a range of other advanced technologies to aid in the performance of their 4x4 models. For example, the Gladiator and Wrangler Rubicon models come with locking front and rear differentials. When you lock a differential, the wheels on that axle will spin at the same speed. When you lock both differentials, all four wheels will spin at the same speed, allowing you to carry momentum up steep terrain. Another high-tech feature is the electronic sway bar disconnect, featured on the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe, Wrangler Rubicon, and Gladiator Rubicon. At the push of a button, this allows you to unlink the sway bar and allow the front wheels to rise and drop further to maintain contact with the trail. Jeep also uses Dana 44 heavy-duty axles for a more durable, quiet, and smooth ride. Finally, the undercarriage of Jeep vehicles is protected on the trails by high-strength steel skid plates and rock rails.
Does Jeep Offer a Traction Management System?
Like many auto manufacturers, Jeep offers a traction management system. Called Selec-Terrain, Jeep's traction management system is available for models equipped with any variant of Jeep's Quadra-Trac, Quadra-Drive, or Active Drive systems. Selec-Terrain features Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes as standard equipment. Meanwhile, models equipped with a two-speed transfer case, which are the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Compass, and Renegade Trailhawk trim levels, add Rock mode. Using the Selec-Terrain switch allows you to customize the vehicle's capability by making adjustments to various systems. For example, Sport mode raises the transmission shift points to allow for higher engine RPMs maximizing power output for better performance. Meanwhile, Snow mode adjusts the power output, torque split, and traction control system to help maintain traction in snowy conditions. Sand/Mud mode works similarly, while making different adjustments to provide better traction through thick mud or loose gravel. Auto puts the system in control, using a network of sensors to monitor wheel spin and make adjustments on the fly to best handle the current road conditions. Finally, Rock mode shifts the transfer case into 4-LO and lowers the transmission shift points to allow greater torque at lower speeds for maximum off-road crawling control.
