What Powers the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO?
Ahead of the 2025 model year, Ram introduced the all-new Hurricane engine, which offers V8-like performance with greater fuel efficiency and fewer emissions. The Hurricane engine is a 3.0L straight-six engine with a pair of low inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers. By removing two cylinders and adding two turbochargers, Ram created more power while using less fuel. The new RHO uses the high-output variant of the Hurricane engine which delivers 540 horsepower in 520 lb-ft of torque. A significant increase in power compared to the outgoing 5.7L V8, which offered 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The power of the all-new hurricane engine translates into a top speed of 118 mph, limited only by the tires, a 13.1-second quarter mile time, and a 4.6-second 0-60 time. The engine comes paired with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for sequential gear control and a more high-performance driving experience. The new performance model features a powertrain that is 150 pounds lighter than the outgoing performance model. The result of this is a lower power-to-weight ratio for enhanced performance.
Off-Road Capability of the Ram 1500 RHO
What sets the RHO apart from other off-roading trucks is the class-exclusive Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shock absorbers. These provide impressive wheel articulation, with 13 inches of suspension travel in the front and 14 inches in the rear. This helps get the RHO over virtually any trail obstacle. Using Ram Active Terrain Dynamics, the shocks actively help improve body roll control and handling by reading conditions and stiffening or softening the suspension based on the conditions. The shocks also provide a two-inch lift which, coupled with the massive tires, provides 11.8 inches of ground clearance. The 35-inch BFGoodrich T/A KO2 all-terrain tires provide remarkable traction over a diverse range of terrains. Additional off-road control is provided an intelligent four-wheel drive system featuring a BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case. The RHO also uses an electronic locking rear differential mounted to the Dana 60 full-float rear axle for enhanced traction.
2025 Ram 1500 RHO Drive Modes
In addition to the impressive drivetrain and off-roading features, the RHO comes standard with a total of nine drive modes: Auto, Custom, Rock, Mud/Sand, Baja, Sport, and Snow, along with a valet mode which defaults all settings. These drive modes make alterations to a variety of vehicle functions to best handle the selected surface. In the default Auto mode, the vehicle detects the road conditions and makes the necessary adjustments automatically. Meanwhile, Custom mode allows the driver to manually make alterations to the steering feel, suspension stiffness, and other critical functions. In Rock mode, the suspension is softened, allowing for optimal suspension travel while passing over uneven terrain. Meanwhile, Mud/Sand and Snow modes prioritize traction by optimizing the transfer case and rear differential to provide greater traction when it becomes limited. Baja mode shifts the transfer case into 4-High for high-speed traction while tearing up the desert dunes. Finally, Sport mode is used to maximize on-road performance by raising the transmission shift points and optimizing the throttle control and power output for a heart-pounding driving experience.
