Introducing the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid

Brought to you by Marburger Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Shelby, NC

Meet the Wrangler 4xe ("four-by-e"). Not only is it the first Wrangler to offer a hybrid drivetrain, with 375 horses and 470 lb-ft of torque it is also the most powerful factory Wrangler ever built. If you are a Wrangler fan, you've probably been keeping your eyes out for this hybrid model. Let's take a look at what the folks at FCA have created for us!

What does the drivetrain consist of?

The Wrangler 4xe starts with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and adds two electric motors. The first is a motor-generator that takes the place of the alternator. The second motor-generator takes the place of the torque converter in the 8-speed automatic and is capable of propelling the vehicle on its own, or adding power to the gasoline engine's output. Power for the electric motor comes from a 17-kWh, 400-volt battery pack mounted under the rear seat. The battery can be replenished externally by a charging port on the driver's side or internally by the gasoline engine.

Can I drive it just on battery power?

The Wrangler 4xe offers three driving modes. The default "Hybrid Mode" prioritizes battery power but brings the gasoline engine online as needed. "Electric Mode" goes battery-only unless the driver needs full throttle or the charge state dips too low. Lastly, the "E-Save Mode" uses the gasoline engine to propel the vehicle while recharging the battery for later use.

Is the Wrangler 4xe a good off-road vehicle?

It sure is. The Wrangler 4xe is first and foremost a Jeep Wrangler with Jeep's Trail Rated running gear. This includes solid front and rear axles, full-time 4x4 two-speed transfer case, and a fully articulating suspension. The Wrangler 4xe is capable of fording an incredible 30 inches of water. Off-road enthusiasts will find that the instant availability of torque from the Wrangler 4xe's electric motor delivers a more precise driving experience for climbing and crawling.

What Wrangler models are available with 4xe?

The new Jeep Wrangler 4xe is available in three models: The 4xe, Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe. The Wrangler 4xe and Wrangler Sahara 4xe models are equipped with full-time 4x4 systems, front and rear Dana 44 axles, and a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. An available Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential provides extra grip and capability in low-traction situations, such as driving over sand, snow, or ice.

Can I customize my Wrangler 4xe?

Absolutely. A comprehensive portfolio of more than 300 Jeep Wrangler products will be available from Mopar. These will include exclusive Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) offerings. These products will include things like beadlock-capable wheels, off-road bumpers, LED off-road lights, and rock rails. Unlike any other aftermarket offerings, Jeep Performance Parts and Accessories are backed by a full factory warranty. The products are created in close conjunction with the Jeep brand, engineering, and product design teams for development, testing and validation.
