Top Stops on a Road Trip to Charlotte NC

With so many amazing things to do in Charlotte, it's understandable to love the Queen City so much that you'd never leave. But if you're looking for some adventure outside its limits, there are so many fun and adorable North Carolina small towns and attractions that make for the best day trips from Charlotte. So, load up your family and friends, and tag along as the team at Marburger CDJR share our favorite getaways.

High Point North Carolina

The city of High Point is about an hour's drive from Charlotte. It is the smallest of the Triad's three main cities, but there's plenty to do here. High Point is also known as the "Furniture Capital of the World," but there are plenty of exciting places to explore beyond the renowned Furniture Market and the World's Largest Chest of Drawers. For example, the All-A-Flutter Farm allows you to check out a real working butterfly farm in person.

Crowders Mountain State Park

Crowders Mountain State Park is a short 30-minute drive from Charlotte and is one of the best things to do in Gaston County. The park sits on the outskirts of Gastonia, with 5,210 acres and 16 hiking trails waiting to be explored. The fun includes a hike around a lake and along a creek. You can see Charlotte's skyline on clear days by following Crowders Trail for 2-1/2 miles to the top of Crowders Mountain. The highest peak is reachable via Pinnacle Trail at 1,705 feet. It's also the highest point in Gaston County.

Concord, North Carolina

Concord, North Carolina, is the place where racing lives. This amazing city is just 27 miles outside of Charlotte. You can catch a race within Charlotte Motor Speedway throughout the year, either at ROVAL or zMax. So, while Charlotte might have the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Concord is where you go to get up close and personal with racing.

Lake Norman State Park

Lake Norman is surrounded by some fun small towns worth visiting, but the lake itself is among the best day trips from Charlotte. It's North Carolina's largest man-made lake, with 500 miles of shoreline to explore, and is only 45 minutes away from the city. You can rent pedal boats, kayaks, or paddleboards for a lovely day out. Then as the sun goes down, you can visit one of the many delicious restaurants in the area. A meal at Lake Norman is a perfect getaway from Charlotte in itself!

North Carolina Zoo

The North Carolina Zoo is a bit longer of a drive than the trips mentioned above, as it is almost an hour and a half away, but we promise you it is totally worth the drive. Over five miles of trails weave you in and out of various animals' natural habitats. The zoo is the world's largest Zoological Park, with 2,600 wooded acres.
