What Does Jeep Trail Rated Mean?

What Does Jeep Trail Rated Mean?

Jeep vehicles that wear the Trail Rated badge are part of an elite group of the most capable vehicles in the lineup. In 1994, Jeep created the Trail Rated program to ensure the capability of their vehicles and instill trust in their customers, even the most hardened off-road enthusiasts. While the Wrangler and Gladiator both feature a Trail Rated badge at all trim levels, the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, and Renegade all have the Trailhawk trim level which optimizes the drivetrain, suspension, and more for superior off-road capability. All Jeep models that enter the Trail Rated program must pass a five-phase test specifically designed to push the vehicle to its limits and take it one step further. Why does Jeep perform Trail Rated tests?

Jeep vehicles are held to a high standard when consumers and critics are considering off-road capability. Jeep's capability started 80 years ago when they were providing weapons carriers for the United States Army during World War II. After the war, Jeep made the battle-ready capability available to the civilian population, and the rest is history. In 1994, Jeep coined the phrase Trail Rated when they established a program to test the off-road capability of their vehicles. This program ensures that the cars that Jeep says are off-road capable continue to meet and exceed the expectations of off-road enthusiasts, critics, and everyday drivers.

Where do the Trail Rated tests take place?

Pushing the limits of an off-road vehicle requires very rugged terrain. And it doesn't get more rugged than the Rubicon Trail. High in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, the Rubicon Trail's landscape is ever-changing due to the unrelenting weather and constant traffic. Large boulders and steep slopes are the perfect place to test the vehicle's ground clearance, traction, and articulation. Moab, Utah, is the Trail Rated program's second test site. The slick rock surfaces push a vehicle's maneuverability, ground clearance, and traction to their breaking point. Even some professional Trail Rated test drivers cringe at the Hot Tub with its near-vertical rock face being the only way out. The Hot Tub is found on the Hell's Revenge trail in Moab.

What are the five phases of the Trail Rated test?

The five Jeep Trail Rated tests are articulation, ground clearance, maneuverability, traction, and water fording. Each one is rigorously tested to ensure each vehicle meets the expectations.
Articulation: The distance that a vehicle's suspension travels up and down so that all four wheels continue to make contact and keep the car moving in the right direction.
Ground clearance: The measurement of the distance between the bottom of the vehicle's frame to the ground beneath it. The test also inspects the approach, breakover, and departure angles to ensure optimal ground clearance from when you approach an obstacle to when you overcome the obstacle.
Maneuverability: This is a vehicle's ability to pass over rough terrain and narrow switchbacks while staying in complete control. This test is passed with meticulously designed steering systems and wheelbase.
Traction: The vehicle's grip on the surface beneath the tires. This test examines how well the four-wheel-drive systems used by Jeep Trail Rated vehicles perform on some of the most challenging terrains on earth.
Water Fording: How deep the test vehicle can go in the water while still operating properly. For example, thanks to an air intake placed high in the engine bay and sealed electrical connections and wires; the 2021 Jeep Wrangler can take on up to 30 inches of water.
