How Powerful is the All-Electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT?
The Charger Daytona SRT will be Dodge's first-ever all-electric vehicle, also known as a battery electric vehicle, or BEV. Being America's muscle car brand, a lot is expected of Dodge in terms of power and performance. So they knew that their first-ever all-electric muscle car must have enough power to raise the hairs on the back of drivers' necks. Dodge gave their first BEV the name 'Daytona' because of the first car to ever break 200 MPH, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. The Banshee powertrain was designed by Dodge to launch the brand into an all-electric future. Banshee is a 400-volt BEV system that uses a rechargeable battery pack to power two electric motors; one in the front and another in the rear to provide all-wheel drive. The BEV system is linked to the new eRupt multi-speed transmission. The eRupt transmission provides that satisfying lurch with each shift that is part of the muscle car experience using electro-mechanical shifting. The PowerShot feature, which is already available in the 2023 Dodge Hornet R/T, is also used by the Charger Daytona SRT Concept. Activating the PowerShot feature gives drivers a 15-second burst of additional power, whether overtaking on the highway or setting a track record. The Banshee system provides the all-electric muscle car with two output levels, providing different levels of performance. The standard output variant, used by the base trim, uses a 340-kilowatt (kW) powertrain to provide 455 horsepower. Meanwhile, eStage 1 provides 495 horsepower with 370 kW, and eStage two supplies 535 horsepower with 400 kW. Also available is a 440-kW powertrain, which gives the base trim 590 horsepower, while the eStage 1 gets 630 horsepower, and 670 horsepower is provided to the eStage 2 models. There have been mumblings from Dodge about a Banshee powertrain with 800 volts, however, it has not been announced yet.
Why is Dodge Going Electric?
Going electric is a logical choice for the muscle car brand for a few reasons. First and foremost, it is becoming the norm in the automotive industry and will soon be required of auto manufacturers. Most important for Dodge, however, is that it will further enhance its performance. This is because of the immediate torque available for electric vehicles. With a traditional internal combustion engine, the engine must build up its revolutions per minute (RPMs) to provide the torque required for top speeds and quick acceleration. This is why Dodge uses the Launch Control feature for the current Hellcat models. However, with all-electric power, there is no need for launch control or a delay to build up RPMs. This is because electrons are constantly flowing, ready to be sent to the wheels instantaneously, rather than waiting for fuel to be ignited in the cylinders of a gas-powered engine.
Interior Design of the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept
The interior of the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept goes beyond a muscle car. It takes excitement to a whole new level with the feeling of the cockpit of a fighter jet. This begins with the driver-centric layout, with the center stack angled nearly ten degrees to the left to face the driver. At the top of the center stack is a horizontal 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen providing access to everything from navigation and entertainment to climate controls and performance features. Meanwhile, the dashboard also features a 16-inch digital instrument cluster with an eight-by-three-inch head-up display. In front of the digital instrument cluster is a performance-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel with the center detached from the outer rim, giving it a floating illusion. The center console features a red flip-cover over the ignition button and a pistol-grip gear shifter, extending the fighter jet cockpit feeling. Lastly, a panoramic glass roof provides the interior with a spacious, airy space with plenty of natural lighting.
Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept Exterior Design
The first-ever EV from Dodge is not your typical EV, which is immediately evident by the muscle car design. The fierce and commanding presence of the Charger Daytona SRT Concept begins with its low and wide stance. While the concept car serves as a symbol of the Dodge brand, it captures its muscle car history with a grille that resembles that of models past and the triangular Fratzog symbol at the center. The Fratzog logo, which dates back to the 1962-1976 model years, replaces the current Dodge Rhombi emblem. The front fascia has a slim white LED light bar that connects both headlights, while the rear has a similar light bar in red. The rear light bar passes through another Fratzog logo that is illuminated in red. At the front of the hood is a patent-pending R-Wing, providing aerodynamics unlike any other vehicle. This feature gives the vehicle's front end openings to allow air to pass through and over it to enhance performance by increasing downforce.
