Standard Safety Features for the Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today, the automotive industry is relying more and more on advanced technology to keep drivers and occupants safe with driver assist technologies. No matter the trim level you choose, the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a full suite of driver assistance technologies. First is blindspot monitoring with rear cross-path detection. Using rear-facing sensors, this system detects vehicles in your blind spots on either side and alerts you by illuminating a light on the side view mirrors. Meanwhile, when in reverse, the rear cross-path detection uses visual and audible warnings to alert you to vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians crossing behind your Grand Cherokee. Meanwhile, the advanced forward collision warning system uses front-facing sensors to warn you of an impending frontal collision. If preventative action isn't immediately taken, the Grand Cherokee's brakes will automatically be applied to give you more time to react. The forward collision warning system also works for cyclists and pedestrians. Jeep's active lane management system uses visual and audible warnings to alert you if you begin to stray from the lane you're traveling in. If you don't react and take corrective action, the system will automatically steer the Grand Cherokee back to the center of its lane. Another advanced system is adaptive cruise control with stop and go. While operating like standard cruise control, Jeep's adaptive cruise control system monitors the speed of the vehicle in front of you and maintains a safe distance. Meanwhile, when there is no car in front of you, the Grand Cherokee will return to the set speed. In the unfortunate event of a collision, you and your occupants are protected by the Grand Cherokee's high-strength steel frame with side impact beams, designed to keep impact energy away from the cabin, along with front side airbags, front airbags, and curtain airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners.

Optional Grand Cherokee Safety Technologies

In addition to the Grand Cherokee's suite of standard driver aids, there are numerous others that are optional for the lineup while standard at higher trim levels. The first optional safety feature is a 360-degree surround-view camera system, giving you an all-around view of the Grand Cherokee and its surroundings to safely enter and exit parking spaces. It can also be used to navigate narrow off-roading trails. Perhaps one of Jeep's most advanced safety technologies is the night-vision camera. This uses infrared radar sensors to detect pedestrians and animals in the dark up to 328 feet ahead - far beyond where the headlights reach and shows it on the digital instrument cluster. To ensure driver safety, drowsy driver detection is also optional, using audible and visual alerts to warn drivers if they are showing signs of drowsiness, such as frequently changing lane position or fluctuating vehicle speed. Meanwhile, to help navigate parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, the parallel/perpendicular park assist system helps steer you into an open parking space while you operate the gear, brakes, and accelerator. Meanwhile, the digital rearview mirror. While operating as a normal rearview mirror, a live feed of the road behind you can be displayed in the mirror using a rear-facing camera, giving you an unobstructed view. The last feature we'd like to tell you about is Jeep's Active Drive Assist, which is so advanced that it deserves its own section.

Does Jeep Offer an Autonomous Driving System?

The last optional safety system that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is eligible for is called Active Drive Assist, Jeep's semi-autonomous driving system. This feature coordinates the other safety systems to intelligently drive the Grand Cherokee with minimum driver intervention. Standard Active Drive assist requires the driver's hands to remain on the wheel while their eyes remain on the road. Meanwhile, Hands-Free Active Drive Assist is optional, only requiring the driver to keep their eyes on the road. When Active Drive Assist is engaged, the adaptive cruise control and active lane management system will keep you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and centered in your lane. The Hands-Free system adds a system named Curve Speed Control, in place to sense when the Grand Cherokee is approaching a curve and appropriately slows the vehicle and steers through it accurately. At the other side of the curve, the vehicle will return to the set speed. When equipped with Hands-Free Active Drive Assist, the Grand Cherokee can intelligently change lanes on the highway with minimal driver input. Simply activate the directional toward the lane you wish to enter, and the system will use the blindspot monitoring feature to ensure the coast is clear, then smoothly change lanes. It is important for us to note that autonomous driving systems, whether hands-free or not, can only be used on approved roadways. The good news is that over 125,000 miles of highways in America are approved, with more getting approved each year. The Grand Cherokee's GPS can detect if a roadway is approved or not.
